	Mother's Day is a celebration whose purpose is honoring the mother of the family, motherhood as well as the influence of mothers in society. Mother's Day originated in the old days when many girls from working - class families in towns and cities or from farmers' ones in the country worked for rich people. Once a year, it was usually on Sunday in March, they could visit their mothers. They went home and brought presents for their mothers and other members of their families. People called that day Mothering Sunday or Mothering Day which later became Mother's Day today. 
	In the USA, the modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908 by Anna Jarvis - a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers. She held a memorial for her mother at a church in Grafton, West Virginia. At first, her idea of the day encountered a lot of protest from the US government. Until 1914, President Woodrow Wilson and Congress decided to choose the second Sunday of May to be Mother's Day in the USA. On Mother's Day, American children do something to show their love and gratitude to their mothers. Generally, they present their mothers with gifts such as flowers, cards, clothes, perfume or books, etc. Also, they sometimes cook for their mothers a special meal. People who cannot be with their mothers on that day usually send them presents and call them on the phone.
