(1.25 points) How to live independently is, probably, one of the questions that are most frequently asked by people, young and old. According to experts, there are a number of steps that people who want to become independent should follow. Below are some of them. First, you should believe in yourself. That is the first and most important condition to make others believe in you. If you don't have faith in yourself, you will always turn to others for help every time you have to make a decision. Believing in yourself will make you trust your own decisions, even if they completely go against someone else's. Second, get your own information. You should watch and read the news from different sources. It's important to read as much as possible, whether it is literature or daily newspapers. The information you get from reading will allow you to get both sides of every story before you form an opinion. Being well-informed will keep you from being a follower and will lead to more independent thought. Third, maintain solid friendships. You don't have to reject people as friends to be independent. In fact, your independence is reinforced with good friends. When your friend needs someone to talk to, be there for them, and listen to their problems with sympathetic and understanding attitude. This way, you will not only help your friends, but their stories will help you to learn how to deal with similar situations that may come up to you later in your life. No Statements T F NG 1. You should believe in yourself so that other people will help you when you have to make a decision. 2. When you have a lot of information, you can think more independently. 5. People who reject their friends are not very independent. II. Read the following passage and circle the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. (1.25 points) The generation gap refers to the difference in attitudes or behavior between a younger generation and the older one. In my opinion, different attitudes towards life, different views about certain problems, and a lack of communication can cause a generation gap in most societies. The first factor is that parents and children generally see things from different perspectives. Choosing a career is a good example for this. Many parents try to impose certain careers they favor on their children, based on their own perceptions. However, young people don't always understand their parents' points of views. Instead, they prefer to be free to make their own decisions on their future career. Another factor lies in differences in musical tastes, fashion, and political views between young people and their parents. For example, having a pierced nose might be viewed as fashionable by some teens, but for many parents, it is considered to be an act of rebellion against social norms. Some parents may also find their children's behavior unacceptable and disrespectful to traditional values. The major factor causing the generation gap is the lack of communication between parents and their children. Parents tend to be dominant and not to trust their children to deal with crises. Also, they keep talking too much about certain problems. That is the reason why young people seldom reveal their feelings to their parents. When facing problems, young people prefer to seek help from their classmates or friends. The above mentioned factors could lead to a generation gap. In order to bridge the gap between the old generation and the younger one, mutual understanding is the vital key. The wisest solution would be for parents and their children to treat each other as friends. A. Choose the best option A, B, C or D (0.75 points) 1. What is the best title of the reading passage? A.
