UNIT 13: ACTIVITIES AND THE SEASONS

Lesson 1: A  The weather and the seasons (1, 2)

I. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: 

- To introduce the theme of the unit: ACTIVITIES AND THE SEASONS

By the end of the lesson Ss will be able to: 

          + Ask and answer about the weather.

          + Talk about the weather in each season in Viet Nam. 

1. Knowledge:

Vocabulary: season, weather, spring, summer, autumn/ (fall), winter, hot, cold, warm, cool.

Grammar: Revise on the simple present.                        

2. Skills: Integrated skills

+ Main skills: Listening - Speaking

+ Sub skills: Reading - Writing

3. Attitude: Educate Ss like joining activities and tasks in class.

4. Orientation competence development: 

- General competences: Problem – solving, communicative, creation and cooperation.

- Specific competences: Self-taught, brainstorming, giving solutions, managing.

II. TEACHING AIDS: Flip chart, textbook, pictures, paper cards, and cassette player.

III - PROCEDURES:

III - PROCEDURES:
1. Lead – in: Prediction (to integrate geographic knowledge about seasons – RECOGNIZITION) 5’
- Display pictures of 4 seasons.
- Ask Ss to predict what seasons in each picture. (Vietnamese is ok)
- Have the answers.
- Get feedback.
- Make a question to lead in the new lesson: How many seasons are there in Viet Nam?
Suggested answer: There are four seasons in Viet Nam.
2. Presentation (to know some vocabulary and structures to talk about the weather and the seasons - RECOGNIZITION) 12’
- Elicit new words by using pictures, actions, visuals, explanations...
- Ss give word by word. (Vietnamese is ok.)
- Write down the words.
 Season: mùa (Example: There are 4 seasons in a year.) 
 Spring: mùa xuân (Exlanation: There are “Dao, Mai” flowers in this season)
 Summer: mùa hạ (symbol of the summer is “Phuong” flowers)
 Fall = Autumm mùa thu (picture)
 Winter: mùa đông (exlanation: we must wear warm clothes in this season.)
 Weather: thời tiết (translation) 
 Cool: mát mẻ (translation) 
 Warm (adj) ấm áp (translation) 
 Cold (adj) lạnh (action, picture)
 Hot (adj) nóng (action, picture)
- Copy down the new words.
- Practice reading the new words chorally – individually.
+ Checking: “Matching” English -Vietnamese)
* Model sentences:
Make a question to elicit the model sentences:
+ What’s the weather like in the summer?
+ It’s hot.
+ What’s the weather like (in) ?
 + It’s + adj
Form: 
- Explain the usage of the structure.
Usage: To ask and answer about the weather.
Have Ss copy down the structure and practice reading.
3. Listen and repeat (to practice reading sentences about the weather in each sentence - UNDERSTANDING) 7’
- Pay the tape twice.
- Listen to the text.
- Listen again and repeat sentence by sentence.
- Practice reading sentences individually.
 - Get feedback by calling some students to read the sentences in front of the class.

Lesson 2: The weather and the season(A3, 4, 5)
I. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: 
By the end of the lesson Ss will be able to: 
	- Talk about their favorite weather with” what weather do you like?”
	- Answer the questions “What do you do, when it’s . ?” 
1. Knowledge:
	Vocabulary: Topic: season and weather.
	Grammar: Revise on simple present.	
2. Skills: Integrated skills 
	Main skills: Listening - Speaking
	Sub skills: Reading - Writing
3. Attitude: Educate Ss like the weather in the seasons, and the activities in the seasons.
4. Orientation competence development:
General competences: Problem – solving, communication, creation and cooperation
Specific competences: Talk about the weather they like and the activities they do in the seasons. 
II. TEACHING AIDS:Flip chart, books, pictures, paper cards, and cassette
III. PROCEDURES:
1. Check up: (to check Ss’ old knowledge which they learnt in last lesson – UNDERSTANDING) 5’
- Call on two Ss to ask and answer about the weather in each season, using the pictures in A1 (p/ 134)
- Have theanswers.
S1: What’s the weather like in summer?
S2: It is hot.
- Get feedback and give marks.
2. Warm – up / Lead – in: Word square (to review on the old vocabulary about the weather and the seasons – RECOGNIZITION) 7’
- Show the word square on a sub board or on the project.

- Asks Ss to find all the words related to the weather and seasons in groups.
- Groups’ presenters write down their groups’ work.
- Public check and decide the winner.
3. Presentation (to provide new language to talk about the weather and the seasons - RECOGNIZITION) 10’
- Play the tape twice.
- Listen to the text.
- Listen again and repeat sentence by sentence.
- Practice reading the text....Ss to read before the class to check.
- Get feedback.
- Notice: What does Ba do when it is hot?
When it is hot, he goes swimming. (He goes swimming when it is hot.)
- Have Ss work in pairs to ask and answer about Ba.
- In pairs, Ss practice to ask and answer the questions (A4 –p.136)
- Call some pairs to speak before the class to check.
- Get feedback.
Ex: S1: What does Ba do when it is cool?
 S2: He goes jogging when it is cool.
6. Write – it – up (to develop Ss’ writing skill with the new language - HIGH APPLICATION) 5’
- Ask Ss to write sentences about themselves.
Ex: “I like cool weather. When it is cool, I (often) have a picnic”
- Work individually. 
- Call some Ss to write their sentences on the board.
- Public check.
7. Homework: 2’ 
- Learn the lesson.
- Prepare: Unit 13; B1

Lesson 3: B – Activities in seasons (B1)
I. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: 
By the end of the lesson Ss will be able to say some activities again & use “adverbs of frequency”. 
1. Knowledge:
	Vocabulary: Adverbs of frequency (always,usually), go sailing, play basketball
	Grammar: Revise on the simple present.	
2. Skills: Integrated skills 
	Main skills: Listening - Speaking
	Sub skills: Reading - Writing
3. Attitude: Educate Ss like the weather in the seasons, and the activities in the seasons.
4. Orientation competence development:
General competences: Problem – solving, communication, creation and cooperation. 
Specific competences: Talk about the weather they like and the activities they do in the seasons using the adverbs of frequency. 
II. TEACHING AIDS:Flip chart, books, pictures, paper cards, and cassette
III. PROCEDURES:
1. Check up (to check Ss how they get from the last lesson – UNDERSTANDING) 5’
- Call on some Ss to answer the questions.
T: What does Ba do when it’s hot?
S1: When it’s hot, he goes swimming.
- Have the answers.
